- How do I make a winning hand? / The game does not recognize a winning hand
The purpose of the Japanese Mahjong game is to make a valid hand.
A valid hand (save for exceptions) consists of a hand made out of 4 triplets [pons/pongs] / quartets [kans/kongs] (3/4 identical tiles) and/or sequences [chii/chous] (1-2-3, 5-6-7, etc.) and one pair. Each singular triplets/quartets, sequences and pairs have to be from the same suit (for example: having three Bamboo 5s is considered a triplet, having one bamboo 5 and two coin 5s is not a triplet, but the two coin 5s are considered a pair).
Also, to make a valid hand you must earn a Yaku by doing specific combinations (for example: Having a dragon trio in your hand).
Concealed hands always earn a Yaku if you riichi/reach out.

Also, a Dora does not earn a Yaku, so if you have a Dora but no Yaku, you won't be able to win with that hand.
Several Doras and Yakus combined, however, will increase the payout of your hand if you win.
These "Yaku" rules are exclusive to and characterist for Japanese Mahjong (also known as Riichi Mahjong).
If your "winning hand" does not meet these requirements it won't be considered valid and you won't be able to win.
- The game does not recognize "One set of identical sequences".
If you combine (grab a discarded tile from another player) a Chii/Chou, Pon/Pong or non-concealed Kan/Kong the following Yaku become nullified/void. They are only available in concealed hands:
>Ready hand
>Self pick
>No-points hand
>One set of identical sequences
>Two sets of identical sequences
>Nine gates
>Four concealed triplets
If you combine a Chii/Chou, Pon/Pong or non-concealed Kan/Kong the following Yaku lose 1 Han. You will still have a winning hand but your hand's worth will be less as opposed to having a concelead hand.
>Three colour straight
>Straight through
>Three colour triplets
>Terminal or honor in each set
>One suit plus honors

>Single suit hand
